1. -40 (it’s the same in both F and C!)
2. First week of 2018
3. Sioux Falls, SD
My 94 year old grandfather was hospitalized and my brother, Dad, and I drove up from Texas on an emergency trip. My grandpa was better before we got there but for the week we were in SD, the highest high temperature was -5F (the high on the coldest day was -19F). The temps dropped below -40 but we didn’t go outside and I don’t remember exactly where they ended up (I was excited for -40 since it’s the same in F and C).

Honestly I don’t remember the specifics. I’ve been in the negative single digits a few times, but ultimately that’s not cold enough to force any specific changes.
There was a week in 89 or 90 where they didn’t let us go outside for recess, but I think that was just due to single digit temps.

I will put a few question marks on this as I was a bit young to remember, but I will give you commentary.
We had a 1982 Ford Escort in northern Wisconsin in the mid-80s. It was a serious blizzard and I had to goto school. So mom went into the garage and I climbed into the back seat and saw the rear window looked funny.
It was so cold it froze the rear window of the car in the garage
and shattered it. We closed the door, gently, and it completely fell into the car. A neighbor took me took me too school and I walked home.

I’ve done negative single digits to somewhere around -10f in various parts of New Mexico a bunch of times (skiing, or otherwise just a rare cold snap). The coldest I’ve ever slept outside in was a night with a low right around 0f on Glorietta Mesa in Northern NM (2007ish, maybe?) for a cold weather exercise with the Marine Corps. The gauge for cold was the nights over the years when all the dozens upon dozen of 5 gallon water jugs were frozen solid in the morning. The sleeping wasn’t bad at all, but watch that night was a cold couple of hours doing nothing.

It hit -48 F when I was living in Illinois back in 96-97. I remember two days in a row of colder than -25 F.
I hate the cold , and prefer a hot summer day with it being well over 100 with 100 percent humidity.

We lived in Minot ND for a year back in the 80s. There were things I experienced for the first time.
Block heaters on everything
Interior pre-heaters
That throw hot water in the air and make clouds trick
Leaving your car running while you went into the store often
Flesh freeze warnings across the bottom of the TV screen as if it was a thunderstorm warning.
-40F temp one night.
-100F wind chill temps that same night.

Back on 2/27/ 2014 I saw -32°F while driving . It was -30°F when I pulled into my driveway, so I ran outside with no shirt on because it was the coldest I’d ever seen the temperature. It was painfully cold, even after only about 10 seconds.

December 2016, at the Bears game against the Packers. It was so cold, they were letting people into the clubhouse area where it was heated and covered. Stadium’s temp showed -10 F. We tried to stay outside as much as we could, but my beer and vodka (not together) drinks were frozen solid. Bears blew that game too. Wouldn’t recommend.

When I was a kid it got down below -30° F in Cleveland one day. This was accompanied with that infamous Lake Erie wind. That was something else; you’d be walking down the sidewalk, come out from behind a parked car, and the wind would knock you right off your feet, so you learned to lean into it when coming out from behind any wind block
.
I went outside in that -30° jazz
for, like, two minutes, and when I came in the tip of
my nose was frost-bit.

-40 F. January/February temps in generally can get into the -30s during cold snaps.
Massena, NY
Some date in the 80s. It was more common for school to get canceled/delayed for wind chill than precipitation during the winter. When I was growing up, -20 F (without wind chill) was the temp cutoff for school delays.

Janurary 14th 1999. The closest weather station with searchable history to where I was records the low temp of the day as -31 F, however I was up in the hills ~20 miles away from that station (Stowe-Morrisville State Airport) and the thermometer outside my college dorm in Johnson VT read -42 F . I had a 1989 Mazda Protege LX and I went to start it because I needed to go buy cigarettes (man I’m glad I quit smoking...) , It had a good, newish battery, so I figured it was worth a try. It cranked, slowly , but didn’t seem to catch, so I let off the key and it continued to turn.
putt.
putt putt.
putt. putt-tt , putt.
The tach needle sort of bounced off the peg every “putt” it made, but never actually moved up to the lowest mark on the face at 500 .
I made the mistake of trying to let the clutch out and it died immediately. It restarted surprisingly easi ly but it took it nearly a minute before it made it to regular cold idle RPM. Even after the engine reached normal idle, the trans was so stiff I could barely shift, and letting my foot off the clutch, the pedal slowly oooozed back up, rather than returning normally. That made driving in the snow exciting. I’m sure some things were not lubricated correctly during that time, but it ran fine for another 100K miles.

Spent a couple years as a kid in Soo, MI. January 1997 was brutal up there. The entirety of Lake Superior froze over. It also snowed on the 4th of July up there in either 1998 or 1999. Only place I’ve ever seen the college coeds sunbathing at 40*F
A few years later, I moved to California. I then realized
that not everyone could accurately
guess how cold it was(within a few degrees
)
during single digit temps
when out in Tahoe.
Similar to how
most people can tell the difference between 65*F and 70*F

N othing super exciting - was up in AK for a wedding over a decade ago, got down to like -7. Anchorage, no wind and it was dry so it really didn’t feel that cold. Coldest it’s ever been at the house here was exactly 0 for just one day when we had a super cold snap a number of years ago - front faucet started dripping inside the cover which caused some concern, but after everything melted it was fine.

March 28th 2010
Fort Sill Oklahoma,
-9 F
I was in Basic Training and finishing up our FTX (Field Training Exercise) We were sleeping in tents and training in mock Villages and FOBs learning how to look for IEDs and work with local populations. That night we had to defend our little base from an “attack” from folks picked by the DS to be OPFOR. It was so much fun but bad weather rolled in and it started to snow. The storm got bad in the middle of the night and all the diesel fuel jellied keeping the tent heaters from working. 7 or 8 inches of snow fell overnight so there was no transportation from the field. We had to ruck out in the cold back to the barracks. Good times!
